8 bit video games collection | 8 bit video games, Atari, Sinclair Spectrum, C-64, Amstrad, BBC Acorn, if you can remember any of these computers, then you can remember the age of 8 bit video games. In those days the graphics and game play were simple.
Anyone who had a computer could learn how to program games, and make their own games. Some even did, while others were more interested in desktop publishing and started their own video game magazines, or video games clubs. Most of the games were on cassettes, and had to be loaded up on a tape, which could take some time, depending on the game. Not all the games came on a cassette, as some could plug in a game cartridge. The magic of game cartridges was that you did not have to wait very long for the game to load. Cartridges are still being used today in handheld video games consoles like in Nintendo´s gameboy.
It was the era of the Joystick, and the joystick is making a comeback in today's games. Since the days of 8 bit games, video games hardware has evolved beyond our wildest dreams. The chips that power game consoles have become smaller and more powerful.
This has led to some changes to the games we play, as they have become bigger, and more complex. As a result 8 bit games are making a comeback with TV games joysticks that can play some of the games of the era. Games like Pac-man, and Galaxian were some of the pioneers of gaming. |
The secret to playing 8 bit games, is their playability. The highscore plays a big part of that, as you are always trying to beat it. The more you play, the better you will get, and the faster the game will play as you finish each level. Going from one level to the next, you will feel how you are given less, and less time to make your next move in the game. With less time to think your next move, you have to react to what is happening in the game. A joystick is the perfect match for reacting to what is happening. It is also the tool of choice for many 8 bit games.
To re-live that era, the video games joystick from Namco, has five of those classic games built-in, including Pac-man, and Galaxian.
