the Future of video games

The future is online, the future is online video games, and it is hands free video games. A few years back there was a movie called Back to the future II, and if you have seen the movie, there is a scene in the movie were the main character, Marty travels with his professor friend the Doc to the year 2015.

In the movie Back to the Future II, Marty finds a video game arcade machine, in a restaurant called the café 80īs. In the scene, two kids discover an abandoned video game arcade machine with the game the Wild Gunman. Marty tries it out, as he used to play it all the time when he was a kid at 7-11. He takes up a gun that is connected to the game machine, and takes a few shots at the characters in the game.

The game is a cowboy arcade game, and he finishes it off with a few excellent mark shots. The two kids exclaim in their horror that you have to use your hands to play the game. Before leaving, they call it a baby's toy. The scene in the movie is supposed to happen in the future in the 2015. What games will be like in the future is a good question. We are still some way from games like that kind of reality, but are taking steps towards it. One of those steps might be a toy like the Eye Toy, on the PlayStation 2

PlayStation 2 Eye toy
This development has started on the Play station 2 in a limited way, with the Play Station 2 Eye toy. The Eye toy uses a USB motion-tracking camera to record your movements, and then incorporates those movements with in the game.

This allows you to interact with Eye Toy games, using your whole body. What makes them great is their playability, and they can be great to play with groups of people, which is great for parties. They are also great to do exercise, as you have to interact more directly with the Eye Toy camera.

Games included on the Eyetoy:Play game disc, are games like Kung Foo and Wishi Washi, have already become very popular, Games like this would be played, by standing directly in front a television, with the Eye Toy camera pointed at you, to record your action, and then you would be able to see your self immersed with in the game.

You can interact with the game, by moving your hands over elements with in the game, and hit objects, and they would respond to your movements.

People are having fun with the Eyetoy.
People of all ages can have fun playing games with the Eye Toy.

Artificial Reality
This kind of interaction is called Artificial Reality and is a term that was invented by Myron Krueger, in a book called Artifical Reality 2.Myron set up an exhibition using a camera, and on a computer, people could interact with all kinds of forms that they saw on a screen.

The Eye Toy for the Play Station 2 is not the first to use this technology, and there have been other systems like the Mandala system for the Amiga. That system was made by a company called Vivid group, and has games like sport games, where you can interact with the action that was happening on the screen.

What is so exciting is that the Eye Toy is the first toy of its kind for a video game console. This might be the first small step for video game consoles, but one giant leap for interacting with video games, which have been mostly bound to using game controllers and joysticks. Now you can fully interact with the game environment.

What this might lead to, are more possibilities, with in the game environment, and how we play games. The Eye Toy camera could be used to digitise information into the PlayStation 2, and then use that information in the game. An area that this kind of development has started is in facial capture technology, what that means, is that you could put your own face on the character with in the game.

A company called Digimask, along with Sony, is developing a technology like this, and already there is a game that has been released that allows you to put your face in the game using this kind of technology. That game is MLB 2005, and you can also interact with the game using your voice, using a USB headset.

Using voice recognition, you can call pitches or defensive shifts, without using a controller. Voice Recognition is new area that games are beginning to use, but have also been using in co-operative modes of games like SOCOM 2, and other games. Now they are being used to access that game directly, and to make the game more interactive.

As the games get more interactive and immersive playing games could become more about being in the gameworld. The Next generation game consoles could give gamers just that, a sense of presence in the game world instead of a window into the game world. Technologies like High Definition Televisions are becoming cheaper and more popular, and have an higher resolution than conventional TVīs.

Several HDTV video games are already out that use HDTV, but expect the next generation of Consoles to take full advantage of them, because of the need for a Blu-ray drive to play bigger games.

Not only could the games be bigger, they could also become more immersive. Interaction with the game environment might become a question of hands free gaming, where there will not be any need for a controller. Virtual reality games where you interact with game environments like in racing or snowboarding games might be like in a real environment.

Just like in a real environment games offer players an opportunity of competing with each other. An online competition offers players a rewarding challenge to prove their skills. As more players get interested to compete against each other, games could offer different video game rewards. What those rewards would be, could depend on the game, and what it offers in terms of competition.

The future of video games is very exciting for gamers, as it offer more diverse possibilites of experiencing games.
